beoFrenz Instant Mobile Messenger
I am sort of an Instant Messaging (IM) addict and I also check emails daily unless I go on holiday trips. I always wanted to message friends or business partners via IM ever since I had 3G access on my Nokia N95 and I chanced upon this site that has its HQ in downtown Kuala Lumpur. Its’s a Meebo replacement that resides on your mobile phone called beoFrenz. On the site’s description, it says:
BeoFrenz keep you update with your social life, with allows you to connect to MSN, Yahoo, and its own community Beo. Besides mobile, its has a social communities website, http://beofrenz.com which allow you to create your own communities.
The Project Manager, Chris told me to drop by one day and speak to their CEO (Mr Sia Hui Yong) to get an insight on what they really do….
Q: What is the latest beoFrenz version and what does it run on ?
Its currently on the 0.9 stable version and new updates are ongoing at the moment. Right now we support the Symbian 60 platform and we may move to S40 later.
Q: How many users does beoFrenz have ?
We had about 100 beta users in early 2007. Since we had a small tie up with Nokia Indonesia, where Nokia 6500 phones were pre-installed with our software, it had grown to over 500 members.
New Update : Chris tells me that they already have around 11K users, and they’ve partnered up with virtualmalaysia.com.my, to leverage on the travel portal’s 30K user base.
Q: What special features are there on beoFrenz ?
Well for one thing, its coded on Java which means it runs on all mobile platforms like Symbian and Windows Mobile. The screen size will auto adjust on your mobile phone too.
Q: What IM platform does beoFrenz support?
Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk, Jabber. There are no plans for AIM yet
Q: Are chat groups or chat rooms supported?
We don’t have plans for that yet. We will have to see.
Q: How does users get support?
We have a team working 5×8 on weekdays now (Malaysia time GMT+8). The support email is on the main site.
Q: Tell me more about the beoFrenz Ads platform?
We can integrate ads into our software whereby it will show up as a Contact on the main screen. A click on that contact ie say DELL, will pop open another tab that shows the advertiser’s content. It’s a non-intrusive way compared to pop ups and banners. We can also integrate RSS feeds from blogs into the beoFrenz content area. Advertisers can also generate reports on the login screen or csv format.
